You see, Apple is doing three things, each of which might be harmless enough, but which collectively add up to a bit of a problem for consumers.ġ) Apple's iPods support only one digital rights management (DRM) system, Apple's own FairPlay system. Apple is being more than a little bit naughty with its digital music strategy, and we'll all be a little better off if Sony gets its way. Woe betide any journalist who tries to predict anything about iTMS.)īut even if it can't win, we nevertheless applaud Sony for trying. (Having said that, Apple will surely open an Australian iTMS overnight, just to prove us wrong. If Sony sticks to its guns, we may never, ever get an iTunes Music Store in Australia, or at least not one that has music from Sony. OK, so using Australia as your leverage is more akin to a battering toothpick than a battering ram, and frankly we don't think Sony can win this battle. Sony BMG is holding the island nation of Australia hostage, refusing to license its music to Apple until Apple either licenses some of its iTunes technology to Sony, or opens up its music store so that Sony's portable music players (and everyone else's, too) can share in the iTunes action. Neither Apple nor Sony will say this publicly, but the staff here in the Digital Life labs understand the reason there's been a two-year delay in the opening of an Apple iTunes Music Store in Australia is that Sony is using Australia as a bit of a battering ram against Apple in its effort to convince Apple to open up its groovy music system to the rest of the world. Or you'll notice it the day you buy an iPod, and find that there's no legal way in Australia to put any of your music onto it unless it literally is your music, with you on vocals, guitar and drums.īoth of those are the distant rumours of a war going on in New York, where Sony BMG Music is fighting with Apple on behalf of its parent company, Sony, and on behalf of music lovers everywhere. You'll notice it just as soon as you buy, say, a new Pete Murray album from Sony BMG Music, and try to put it onto your flash new iPod, only to find you can't. You may not have noticed this battle because the main sign of it is the absence of something, but notice it you will soon enough.
